1986 5000cd starter switch problem

Bought new ignition starter switch but problem consist. It starts several times and than it might quit. Can start it in the unit itself without problem. Could it be the part in the steering lock cylinder that activates the starter switch??

Don't know, but...

The wiring is terrible in these cars. I would check the resistance of the leads from the switch, and turn the key and check the numbers as well. The battery could be weak, what sort of noises does it make? Click, nothing, does the dash light, etc.....?

The light, wiper etc. comes on but the initial start is not there. No noise at all. If I take the switch out and connect it with the wires I can start the car with a screwdriver without problems anytime.
