There are two fluids you'll need to change. One's the regular fluid and the best fluid to get would probably be one with a Dexron Mercon III rating. I use Castrol Dexron Mercon III and it's been good. The other fluid you'll have to change or top up is your that for your final drive. I've never changed my final drive fluid since I bought my car 6 months ago but I'd recommend that you get it changed.

The real problem with these beasts is the seal between the two compartments. It is well-worth changing the seal then putting in redline brand synthetics. Then it won't cost a fortune.

This is real hard to get at. I gave up doing it myself. Now I have it done at a shop. Cost just under $100.00 but it's worth it to me since I currently have know means of lifting the car myself. I've owned my 5k for two years now and have changed the fluid twice...it's recommended to be changed every 2 years I think...? Sure does make a big difference in shifting!
Eharleq makes a good suggestion...the gasket between the finaldrive/tranny does wear out and lets the final drive fluid leak into the tranny. This does end up being one of the main reasons why older Audi transmissions fail. Make sure to check your tranny oil every so often...if it seems like it keeps getting more and more over filled, it's highly likely that the seal is bad...and tranny death is around the corner! So be careful...
