95 90 starting problem

Default 95 90 starting problem

Looking for any ideas...

Car: 1995 90 Sport Quattro 2.8 12V V6 with 95,000 miles

Symptoms: First start of the morning, car "stumbles" as it tries to fire up. This lasts for a second or 2 then goes to normal operation. I've had the car for 6 months, and the first few 1st-2nd shifts (first minute of operation) have always caused a slight stumble if I don't bring RPMs up or try to go too hard. This current starting problem never happened previously, but has occured for the past 4 mornings. Here is what I have considered:

1. The car uses some oil, which appears to be through the valve seals. I thought perhaps the presence of oil might foul the first few plug fires, but the problem clears up too soon, and should happen at other times during the day. I haven't checked the plugs yet to see if they are any different than usual.

2. Leaky injector causing a bleed down in fuel pressure.

3. Time for a fuel filter change.

I suspect that it is fuel related since it clears up so quickly. No check engine light, so it shouldn't be faulty sensors of any sort, but who knows.

Make sure you are using the highest octane gas, and try using Techron made by Chevron, either as an additive or the Chevron gas itself, if it is available in your area. Especially on cold days, this problem seems to get worse. The Techron helped a lot. Just don't go crazy with it.

Default Try checking those plugs...

if it is a leaky fuel injector then one cylinder is going to be real rich on startup, the plug condition might tell you which one it is.

Default My '95 has the stumble too...

..I've always attributed it to the clutch! This may be your problem if you have a 5-spd!! I think the pressure plate "sticks" a little after the car sits. Mine has always done it in the few miles that I've owned it!!

The stumbling idle sounds just like a dirty/bad ISV. Although I haven't dug into this car enough yet to see if it has an ISV. If it doesn't, there should be something else serving the same function!!
