Knock sensor

Finally got result of diagnostic code on my 1988 Audi 90. Fuse was missing and this lead to not being about to read code. Mechanic says check engine light is going off due to knock sensor code. I have ordered one. What kind of problems would a bad knock sensor create? I did have excessive pinging before the timing was changed but also had reliability problems including startup problems. Now the mechanic has changed the timing again and he says startup is fine and car idles perfectly. All we need to do now is replace the knock sensor according to him. Does it sound like we're on the right path and is it OK to run the car for a few days before the sensor comes in from the dealer? BTW, The O2 sensor was just replaced too.
