Default Looking at a 80, need some basic info please, such as....

First off the car is a 89, 80, 5spd, with 99,000 miles. I haven't driven the car yet, they are asking $1950. I currently own a 85 Coupe. Is the drive train the same? i.e. brakes, suspension components? Is the 80 & 90 the same body and runnig gear. And the big question, what tends to go south on this model, i.e timing belt, water pump, hub bearings, control arm bushings etc. My experience with the coupe is EVERYTHING needs replaced at least once! Sometimes twice! Thanx!

I don't know anything about the '85 coupe so I can answer the first question.

The 80 your looking at probably has a 4-cyl. The 80's had 4-cyl until 91 then they went to 5-cyl (10v). The 90 and 80Q always had the 5-cyl (10V). 90Q got the 20v in '90 and '91!! (This is US models)

Also the 80's (including q's) have different tailights and minor things like that. Otherwise they are the same cars....

Most "common" problems are the control arm bushings and A/C problems. (others can add more)

HTH!!

I own an 88 A80, 125K miles, 1800cmc 4 cyl, and so far I replaced:
- pretty much all suspension components (shocks, bushings, control articulations)
- heater core - major PITA, 10 hrs. worth of "navigating" through the dash (pretty much removing it entirely then reffiting it)
- exhaust
- thermostat
- engine mountings
- one rear wheel bearing

On the "to do" list:
- minor problems with the fuel injection system (doesn't run that great when the engine is cold)
- minor problems with the clutch (some difficulties when engaging reverse)
- replace the cooling fan (it runs quite rough and lubricating it doesn't work for long)
- have to figure out why the heater blower works only on the IIIrd and IVth settings
- a rear brake cyllinder - I broke the bleeding screw

Hope this helps,

Sebastian

Default Blower motor....

....problem is most likely a bad blower motor resistor. It's mounted right next to the blower motor and costs ~$15. It only takes about 30 mins to change!!

No, I'm afraid it's not that. I checked it when I changed the heater core and it's good. BTW, how do you reach the blower motor in 30 mins on a TYP89??? (it took me some 5 hrs!)

Anyway, thank you for the tip.

Default I don't reach the blower....

...motor in 30 minuntes. I change it in 30 minutes. Pull it apart and put it back together!!

All you have to do is:
1) Remove the four bolts (8mm) that hold in the glovebox (must open glovebox to do this).
2) Pull the glovebox out (takes a little "wiggling").

You're there!! To get the blower motor out you need to reach up to the "hook" that holds the air ducting to the passenger side vent (pull out the vent). It's just a small metal strap that hooks in on each side. By doing this you can get enough "give" in the ducting to squeeze the blower motor out!! I've changed two blower motors this way!!!

Have you tried putting in a different blower motor?? Or a new "4-position" switch?? I would "guess" it's the switch but I really don't know!! Let us know what you find out!!

Sorry I couldn't offer more help..Good Luck!!'
