looking for a first AUDI...PLEASE HELP!!!
hi, i have my eye on a 1988 90, base 5 cyl. Can you please tell me anything you can about this car? (i use to drive a saab, so have no experience with audi) How does the 90 compare to the mid 80's saabs in terms of cost of maintenance, parts, and ease to work on yourself?
Also, my friends are warning me away from this car because he's heard stories of some audi's that have had terrible problems and cost a lot. Is the 1988 90 one of these? if not, what other models and years should i avoid?

I have a 1988 Audi 90. It has held up extrememly well, I have about 170,000 miles on it right now. No major repairs, but some minor problems (gas gauge, odometer (stuck at 168,000 miles, Ü) ect.) I have also heard that the lifters get worn after a while. But otherwise a great car.

I owned a '90 90 Quattro 20v Sport (4dr) for almost two years untill I sold it and got my '95 90. I also used to drive an '89 Saab 900 untill it was rendered useless in an accident and my family has driven a few 900s. I can tell you that the 5cyl engine in the Audi is highly regarded for its durability and overally robust design. I would say that repair costs will be comperable between a 900 and 90 given similar mileage and use. I would make sure the timing belt was replaced at the all important 90k checkup or thereabouts. Check out www.20v.org and read EVERYTHING!
I do miss my 900 at times due to it's hauling capacity and overall stability. What I don't miss are the cacophony of squeaks and rattles that develop in the old style 900s around 70k.
In comparison, the 90 is a MUCH more solid and well built car. The Audi 90s (198?-1992) do exhibit quite a bit of body roll but this is a testiment to their weight and solidity. Plus sizing the wheels from the stock 14" (I think) would do wonders. An old 900 feels like it is on rails in comparison but the 90 is a quieter and safer car with a much better ride at speed. And I couldn't leave out the fact that the 5cyl engine sounds way cool. I do miss that burble and growl compared the the whispering V6 I have now. Hope this helps.
