A 90 would be better than an 80.
I looked at several 90 CQ for sale...some of them were in
bad shape...I would hate to see how bad the 80s would look.
If I had the choice...I would pic an 90 Quattro over an 80.

Re: Would you recommend an Audi 80 as a used car?
If you were to get an 80 I would make sure it was an 80 Quattro. An 80Q is basically the same car as a 90. The 90's usually have a few more bells and whistles than an 80Q but they are effectivly the same car. However, if you can find a 90Q. those are one step up from both of the cars!!
I would stay away from the 80's. You only get a 4-cyl engine and I don't want to even imagine how slow that is, I alos don't really know how the reliablity is on the 4-cyl. So again look for an 80Q or better!
My opinion

90 80Q
91 90
95 90Q

Reliability should be ok, more...
The 4cylinder of the regular 80 is basically a VW unit that was used in the GTI. For the most part, these engines are very reliable. However, yes, the car is kinds slow (but the 90 is no rocketship either)
Bottom line is, get the youngest, best maintained example you can afford.

thanks everyone... I even found a 1990 V8
any thoughts on that one?
it really is kinda interesting to look back and realize what a big difference has occured in Audi's motors.
The 1990 V8 has 240 hp but its 0-60 is greater than my A4.
Thanks again! I really appreciate it...
hopefully this knowledge will convince my gf to get one!

80Q would be best choice, probably.
. I would get the 80 quattro so you get the 5 cylinder engine. quattro is indestructible, so you have few or no worries there. The only reason I can think of to get a 90Q over an 80Q (having owned a 90Q), would be for the leather sport seats; they're sweet! Problem with the 90 is that you get the automatic climate control, which works great until it breaks. Then, you have nightmares. The 80's have manual climate control, which is less troublesome. I would also avoid the power seats, although I recommend the cold weather package for seat heaters, mirror heaters, ski boot, etc. My 90Q had the cold package, but manual seats, which were great.
I'd say my biggest nightmare was the climate control because it's very complicated and hard to diagnose. Otherwise, I found my 90Q to be a very solid car that mostly required wear and tear repairs and maintenence. As with all Audi's, most problems are electrical and not mechanical or structural.
