Default MUST one remove the dash to replace the heater core?

in an 87 5kq. i'd really rather not. it almost looks like you can pull the blower assembly out from between the firewall in the engine compartment and behind the dash. is this possible? i'm afraid i already know the answer (no!). anyone have any other related tips or suggestions on replacing that $%#? i know either tom or dave went through the process in detail, but i've looked through the archives and i can't find it. thanks!

Default I didn't have to remove the dash..

It wasn't easy, and it involved a lot more bending than I would like to see.

Here's what I recall from my heater (blower) motor replacement. Opened up the plenum chamber (firewall chamber i called it). The heater core is the while box, and it's held down with double sided foam tape. It's strong stuff and gets stronger the longer it remains there. You have to take off the lower dash panels to remove the air ducts from the white box. Then I nudged and fudged with the white box so I could just get enough room to open it up and take out the motor. I just had to replace the motor inside the box, so I didn't have to take out the dash. You may wish to take the dash out just to be able to see what you're doing. The thing I remember is that this "three" hour project turned into a three day project. Of course, your milage may vary.

Default Re: I didn't have to remove the dash..

thanks for the feedback. i've heard other people have managed to replace the blower motor without removing the dash, but i'm wondering what i'll have to do to change the core.

Default If you remove the dash...

You may be doing yourself a favor. You won't be cursing as much because, although you are doing more work by removing morethings, but you see what you are doing and where this or that goes. Plus, you have an excuse to hand out in your garage for a while (longer). Plus, I think you have to.
