Need help with friend's car....
My friend's 91 Jetta is having some issues. In the last week he's spent over $500 at 2 different mechanics and is still having problems.
What's happening is the car is seriously bucking while driving. Major hesitaion and jerking. It will do this over and over and when he downshifts it will sputter and die with a thick white smoke out the tail pipe. The car smells like gas when it does this. It will then not restart...
So far the 2 shops have replaced the fuel pump relay, temp sensor, ECU, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, fixed an 02 ground...
Each time they fixed something the car would run for a couple of hours and then revert back to it's non running state...
He's running out of money and I'm looking for some help. I have yet to look the car over and will do so hopefully on Monday...
Both of the shops said the car is getting to much gas...
Anybody familiar with Digifant engines?

Start with a new O2 sensor.
If the O2 is new, try adjusting the mixture. There's a screw on top of the MAF sensor housing(should be the only one on top of the housing, it's near the intake boot) that adjusts the mixture. Clockwise richens, counterclockwise leans it out. If it's getting too much gas, try that. Have him run some heavy duty fuel cleaner, like JB, to clear everything out, and new plugs probably wouldn't hurt either.

Process of elimination...
We used the Bentley manual and a copy of the magazine "Volkswagen Audi Car." That particular issue had a 20 step troubleshooting guide on Digifant controlled engines. Very helpful.
