Rattling lifter solution found...
A half-bottle of "Gunk" 5 minute sludge remover did the trick. It fixed the rattle in less than a minute, so I didn't pour the rest of the bottle in. Then, I put some 5w30 mobil 1 in and no noise whatsoever.
I have never had the rattle in the A4 and believe that this is likely the product of letting it sit for a couple of weeks or grossly overweight oil. I could reproduce these symptoms in an old Mazda rally car with 20w50 in the winter (definitely not advised).
Like the rotor being rammed on so that the spring in the cap was bottomed out. Boy, the car sure idles better now that it is firing on all 5 cylinders.
Like the missing frame rail. That was a steamer.
Like the loose a-arm. Glad the insurance is up to date. Honey, what is that horrible noise?
Like the radiator being held by one bolt. It literally flapped in the wind. Luckily the other mounts didn't break, so it was easy to fix.
Like the hood latch breaking. It lasted a whole week.
Like the konis missing the bumpstops. Boy was it ever harsh. Oh, and he never mailed me the adjuster wheel, even after I asked politely.
Like the battery bouncing around in the frame. The sparks helped the lousy factory headlights.
All in all, just mainly petty annoyances. It runs and stops, and it hasn't caught fire yet. Good thing I still have the other car to run for parts. No sale on the A4 even though it is priced 2k below blue book. The market here is in the toilet.
