Default replacing driver's side door handle

i recetnly acquired a 1985 4000S with only 133k on it
this car rocks!
there is one slight problem however that i need to repair but it was not bad enough to dissuade me from buying this beauty
the drivers side door handle is "falling off"
i mean, it is is coming off, but it is still attached and it still works except for the automatic lock feature: i cannot lock the drivers side door

so i need to repalce it
my question is, "how difficult a process is this?"
i have never done this before
do i need to buy a whole new door or can i just buy a handle?
what about the lock?
can i use the old lock so that i do not require two different keys - one for the ignition/passenger door and the other just for the driver's side door

and should i go through an audi dealership or would any auto parts place, i.s checkers, or napa, be able to order the handle for me

Default Re: replacing driver's side door handle

oh there is one more thing about this car
when i turn the heater and fan on, warm air only comes out of the drivers side register
cold air comes out of the two register sin the middle and the passenger side vent experiences absolutely no air flow
i have played with the controls to exhaust all possible control settings
this does not change
any suggestions?

Default Your purchase choices are audi dealer, (very expensive) or junkyard, (very ...

reasonable). You don't need the whole door, a major task to replace, anyway. You just need a replacement handle. I don't know how easily the lock cylinder is to change, but I have changed door handles before. My main suggestion: There are many levers, rods that attach to the lock. make sure to label them, because reinstallation isn't always obvious.
You'll need to do some wiggling and jiggling, but it can be done. Remove the door inside panel first, then you'll see how to remove the handle.(as I recall, there is a screw on the side of the door, hidden when its closed, that must be removed.)
Good luck.

For your door handle search the aftermarket. I got one for my coupe at the local eurocar place for $30, including lock. As far as your heater probs.... good luck.

I replaced my drivers door handle on my 87 5000s.
I bought it online for $27.Came ready to go with a lock and keys.In my manual it said to take off my inner door panel but I did it from the outside.
I took the rubber plug out from the inside of the door just above the latch to get to the two screws for the door handle.I took them loose a little and then used a grabber tool to take them out the reat of the way.I then took the chrome part off the handle and took that screw out.I then took the rods off the handle with a pair of needle nose pliers{Be carefull not to break the plastic rod clips]Replace doorhandle in reverse order. It took me about ten minutes
