Default Whether 94 Audi 100 V6 engine's toothed belt need to be changed ?

I owned a used 1994 Audi 100 2.6E V6 engine. The car comes with Service Schedule only (Serviceplan Audi, englisch 7.93, 941.563.8S0.20), and in that book, page 7, it mentioned that toothed belt never changed on V6 engine.

I am a bit concern about whether this is correct, as I have asked the local Audi Service centre and they told me that the toothed belt should be replaced every 120,000 KM. I am not keen to replace it if it is not required as the service schedule stated. However I hope someone with a lot more knowledge about this could shed some light on this.

Default If you have any doubts about the timing belt, change it.

That's not worth messing around with, in my opinion. It's better to spend a couple hundred on a belt change than have it break and spend a couple thousand on engine repair. A timing belt won't last forever. Even if it doesn't break, it does stretch over time, and it can eventually stretch to the point where it will jump time. Even if the manual says it never needs replaced, I would have it done every 60,000 miles, which rounds out to about 115,00km, I think. Don't quote me on that, though.

Default Change before 90,000 miles(more)

If the belt breaks, you will have to replace many more parts, and much more $$$$$$$$$, than the belt alone.

I just changed mine at 89k miles... The mechaninc said the belt looked OK but
probably was only good for another 5-8k miles.

However, ask yourself this, you know it needs to be replaced, if you do it now or later what's the difference? You will not be saving any money because you will have to do it at least once while you own the car. Why take the chance.

The rubber belts do deteriorate over time and lose stregth and flexibility. I have done my belts at 71K and 138K on my 93 100S 5 speed - unless you have a chain like some BMW's, the risk is $800 twice in 200K miles or $3 or $4k for sure.
