Meh *shrug*. I dunno...I'm not big in to Ducati sportbikes, but...
...their naked bikes are brilliant (i.e. Monsters). When you buy a $28000+ Ducati, you're buying a sub-standard performing Italian bike with a Ducati decal on it. You're paying for a name really. Yeah, it has top-shelf components like Ohlins suspesion and Brembo brakes, but you can get all that stuff by itself for a Japanese inline that will destroy that bike. I can walk out on the sales floor and buy a $10,000 ZX-10R and put $15,000 worth of accessories on it and it would absolutely destroy that RR in every aspect. $15k would buy CF wheels, pistons, cams, race ECU, Ohlins suspension F/R, full exhaust, etc., etc..

sometimes it's not about dumping 15k into a normal bike. You can do that to a Supra and blow doors
off of exotics. Sometimes it's just about having something that is as close to a MotoGP factory bike than say something you buy off the shelf at your local bike shop. I'd like to see the Japanese counterparts put something like that together, but all we get are paint scheme replicas. :-(

Lol...ummm, Yamaha did exactly that in 2006...

That model was still ~160hp, and even though Ducati is claiming 200hp to rear wheel...I don't believe that for a nanosecond. Wait until someone gets it on the dyno. I'd be willing to bet good money it puts out hp somewhere in the 170s.
So there's your off-the-shelf Japanese GP bike...for $12,000+ less than the Ducati. I ride the standard R1 w/50th colors. The LE version is not drastically different from the base R1.
I'd say Yamaha just made a bike closer to their SBK racing couterparts, but nothing like what Rossi's bike is. The DesmoRR is nothing like the 1098 and what Troy Bayliss rides, it's closer to what Stoner rides. If Honda and Suzuki put out a bike based off their MotoGP bike, it wouldn't even be an inline, it'd be a V4.

That's exactly right...
The DesmoRR is built on exactly the same premise as the R1 LE. It's Ohlins suspension and magnesium wheels. The R1 LE was $18,000 MSRP...the Ducati is what, $72,500??? See where I'm going here? It's not even close to being worth the money. That is the ultimate example of buying a bike as a status symbol and not because you love the sport and want a bike that performs. At least when you buy a Ferrari or Lambo you know you're getting a machine that will smoke all the other cars around you. Take that Ducati out and you could easily get beaten by a mildy worked over Japanese inline that cost 7 times LESS. I'm just saying...I'm not at all impressed by Ducati sportbikes...ESPECIALLY ridiculously overpriced ones.
Multi-millionaires like Jay Leno can waste their cash on that garbage...I certainly never would. That said, it looks nice and it sounds pretty good.

Started riding japanese 2 strokes when I was 7. Raced when I was a kid into my teens, rode tons of
bikes. When I was early 20's I bought a used 1991 900SS about 6 years ago and it was beeatiful. Not a racer but nice to ride and upright and comfortable since I had not raced in years. Then I got a 916sps because I was turned on. Then I sat on the 03 999 when it was first released. Just to sit on it. I was offered to take it out for a ride and I left with it that day. It was magnificent. Then another 999 after totalling that one... Ive riden the 1098 several times and couldnt beleive it could get better. There IS somehting magical about those bikes.

Japanese superbikes are def amazing perf/dollar. FYI the price gap isn't as big as it used to be
New Japanese literbike is about $11-12k and you get about 160hp. New 1098 (non S) is about $14-15k with 145hp. That's not that big a difference. My 851 was $12,250 in 1991 when a Jap literbike was half as much

Depends on where you are I guess...
...we have 08 CBR1000RRs on the floor for $10,299 and the base model 1098 (which we both know is a pretty weak bike) is $15,995 (IF you can find one without a waiting list). $5700 more for an Italian bike that can be easily out-performed by a Japanese inline? Not worth it.
