Default Attn: John/TSR (need SOP for heat cycling new brake rotors in home oven)

John, I know we talked about this before...but now I want to do it. My questions are:

1) What temperature to set the oven at? (500 degrees? self-cleaning cycle?)
2) Duration of heat (minutes/hours?)
3) Multiple-cycles? (2-3 times?) If I do multiple cycles...should I wait a day between them?
4) Should I let them totally cool down before the next cycle?
5) Should I wash them well with soap and water beforehand (to limit the amount of odor)?

Pls advise...I gotta give Corey back his stock stuff.

Thanks.

Default Careful! Your wife may think you're actually cooking! Then,...

...she'll wonder what the heck you mixed up that could possibly smell so bad! :-)

Default Excuse me for interupting

I was just curious to see what you've been up to with your brake situation. Are you baking a new stock rotor or is it an aftermarket?

Default New stock rotor for now....still checking out other options

Drew, I am trying to get decent pads on with the heat treated OEM rotors....after the next high performance driving event I will make an assessment to try other relatively less expensive options...or go the expensive route.

Thanks, that's what I'm looking to do too. $3,600 for Alcons? Ugh.

Default Thanks Drew...I think John is in Florida again on track

BTW, a few of us met John in person while he was in our neck of the woods last week. It was a kick.

Default Another option

Wait and see what the MC S4 cars do. They should be running improved rotors and pads. If it's enough for them, it should be pretty good, or at least more durable and consistent.

Default Not the deep fryer....although.....maybe....

...it just might work...we'll experiment on your rotors.

Sorry about the delayed response - I've actually been at work (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) cleaning up
some messes after being out of town for 6 days. Boy, the cops in San Francisco
really get annoyed if you try "bump-drafting" the cable cars....they're too damn
slow anyway. Beat a rent-a-Hertz to death on the back roads of El Dorado County
(east of Sacramento) on Monday....poor thing.....hope Hertz has extra brake pads.

"Self-Cleaning" cycle. Clean'em off with a good degreaser (like BrakeKleen) or
dish soap, then put'em in the oven on self-clean. Ignore smoke and nasty smell,
if you haven't cleaned all the poo off of'em. Also ignore the really groaty appearance
after they come out. One cycle is all that is necessary. Just grill and eat.

Hopefully, you're doing this with iron rotors, not some funky iron-alloy stuff. My
only experience is with iron rotors.

I think you might as well bite the bullet Steve...all the MC guys melting the stock stuff. Junk! Good thing we are not hampered by real race car rules.
