Search down. - Why no Audi's in WRC?
So I was watching some Rally racing on ESPN2 the other day and asking myself why Audi doesn't have a contender in the World Rally Championship circuit. Are they banned, or does the Quattro system not meet some requirement for the circuit?
Just wondering, if you could point me to a link or something, that'd be great. Thanks!

The Spongls do the hillclimbs...they won Mt. Washington last year
The World Rally championships are for new cars...mostly...Audi doesn't have a lightweight car that is newer. Besides they retired from factory sponsored rally racing back in 1985.
George Plsek and Ru Brazil were each rallying an Audi S2 last year.

I believe the suspension is so complex it would be more trouble than it is worth...
to make it robust enough for rallying. Plus repairs would be harder and more expensive. I wish Audi would rally again, maybe S3 or something.

??? The series 200 cars had very similar suspension setups to our current cars...
And they used those for a rally circuit in Africa. Audi retired from rallying in '85 or so as Steve mentioned (I thought it was '88). Nothing to prove at that point, Audi dominated the rally circuit back then starting with it's UR quattro, the shorty, S2, RS2, even a few 90's and 200's cars. Then came the road racing, transam - and the the ban. Now the LeMans. Hmmm, they may just ban Audi all together
Replacing a Mitsubishi EVO tranny takes as long as replacing an A4's or so - and they had to overnight ship parts from Japan (Pike's Peak rally last year). Not very easy with these modern cars.

They are concentrating their efforts on road racing. They are going for the luxury car image, most rally cars these days are econo boxes due to the nature of the rules.
The A4 would be a good car but the multi link suspension is all wrong for any king of off-road use. If they had a regular A arm suspension there would be many private team already running the A4.
The S3 is a perfect car for rallying, if they sold it here in the states I would be running it long time ago.
Anyway I hope that Audi will change their mind about rallying soon, so we can start kicking some Japanese car butt again. It gets old seeing all Mitsubishis and Subarus at these events running up front specially here in the States.

Re: What about the S3? not new and light enough? By the way did you get my e-mail?
the S3 is perfect, but it is not Homologated that is why you will not see it run any international FIA rallyes
Our rulles here in the US would allow it but we can not buy it here. All rally cars must registered for street use.
Many of the Lancers that you see rallying in the states are registerd under the Mirage car with invalid VIN's

Why not run a TT in Rallying? It is the same platform as the S3!
The suspension is out there, so is a cage. The TT is being road raced in Europe in the DTM. Why not campaign a TT? You can find one at a reasonable price.

I remember reading somewhere...
the main reason why Audi,... along with a couple of other competitors, pulled from WRC is because of safety concerns. B/c there is no regulation wrt where spectators are located... there have been many injuries and even death from cars running into the crowds. I don't think it has anything to do with parts/technology inter-operability. I mean... they didn't exactly build the R8 from the Audi parts bin.
