Transmission Service near Amherst, MA
Hi,
I just bought a 2003 A6 Avant which I believe needs the torque converter replaced. It's throwing the P0742 code and doesn't seem to lock at highway speeds.
Can anyone recommend a shop in the Amherst/Northampton/Springfield area? I talked to Pelham Auto and they said they'd never done one and weren't interested. AAMCO in Springfield quoted me $1,300, but I'd rather not risk going there. Has anyone used Ryan's in Northampton?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Garth
Some people choose to ignore this fault because of the cost of the repair. The check engine light will be on but there is usually no noticeable change in how the vehicle drives. You do have to clear the faults out and prep the readiness codes every time you need an inspection sticker. I have to do this often for customers and usually have no problem getting a sticker.
If you do decide to repair the car, I have heard good things about Interstate Transmission in Auburn MA.

I would be happy to fix the car for you as well, but I am in the
Foxboro / Franklin MA area.

Good luck with the new car!

Thanks for the input. The car does seem to drive fine, but I've read I'll get better MPG with a properly functioning torque converter. The price I paid for the car took the repair cost into account, so I'm okay spending the money, I just want it done right. I'll take a look at Interstate Transmission, I think you're a little far away for me.
