nav+ installation in norcal?
I'm a new RS6 owner, and recently picked up my car last week. Dealer options included basic Nav and the in-dash CD changer. Because I'm not good with cars and don't want to mess up my Audi, I'd prefer to have it done by someone else.
My understanding Nav+ is compatible with the PhatBox, and looking forward to having both installed. I've read the Nav+ website, and waiting to hear back from Avalon Motorsports.
Anyone else with Nav+? I'm kinda excited to see it happen.
So I followed a post on AudiWorld and ended up on the Nav+ web-sites too. I did both the Navi+ & Phatnoise myself. It's a piece of cake !
But keep in mind the cars internal cabling will have to be cut & resoldered no matter if it's done professionally or whatever - the wiring/sockets are simply not a plug & play match.
The nicest thing was I found a much better way to install the GPS Antennae than what they suggest on the Navi+ web-site - ripping out the car seats to lay a cable is a bit too extreme for me :~S
Avalon part & installation charges are crazy (that's another reason I did it myself). Let me know if you wanna demo, and a look inside at the wiring changes, before investing ;-)
Send me mail and we can meet somewhere - I'm in South Bay
Even if they were located in the same place, since the Navi+ has Audio/Video functionality as well as Navi it has different connectors & wiring from the current system : one box for Audio, separate box for Navi.
Look in the Bentley CD-ROM for details of the old Nav connector and then look at the Symphony II connectors - you'll see what I mean.
The problem I found was that the connector pins are impossible to remove after the connector is wired up, so if one pins changes you still need to cut & re-solder. You can see this in the pictures on Navi+ web-site too.
The only good news is that if you already have Navi you probably already have a CAN gateway in the instrument cluster. This gives you the directions in the cluster, while the map or other screen is displaying (see attached picture) - otherwise you have to click a button on the Navi to flip the screen.
Because my car wasn't configured for Navi I had to run those cables and install a TMC/CAN gateway on my own.
The important thing is to do a good job with re-wiring i.e. seal with shrink-wrap, secure with wire-ties, run inside the cable harness.
My dealer took a look at what I did and didn't have a problem with it, but he told me of some other horror stories e.g. shorting out the wiring harness with aftermarket (non-Audi) Navi.
