Possibly selling our car to someone from a different state in the next few weeks.

So today I just paid of our bank loan and now the Lien is removed, I plan to go to the DMV tmrw morning anyway, but wanted to ask here first for info. Appreciate any help if you had prior experience...

-How long do you think it would take to get the "pink slip"/title, can a DMV office print one out or does it have to come from Sacramento ?
-If I cannot get the title in a short time, I may have to bring the purchaser with me to a office in order to transfer ownership, is this feasible?
-Does my car need to have smog testing in order to transfer ownership to a person out of state.

When I paid off the loan, the title came very quickly (under two weeks). All of the manufacturer run financing companies (VW Credit, Ford Credit, etc) use electronic titles. It will automatically be transfered to the DMV and then printed and sent to you. If you used a financing company that has the actual paper title, it will be quite a bit longer.

No smog test, just turned in my plates with the paperwork to AAA (DMV) and that was it.

Yes the title was electronic...
While two weeks is pretty quick, I may need to complete the sale before that time...I'll see what I can find out tmrw from the DMV...
