Seriously..how hard is it to find diesel gas on a day to day basis
Never owned a diesel car before..but just wondering about the availability of diesel stations. I see them around..but not every station has diesel. Just wondering how current diesel owners fare in the bay area finding gas...around town..and on trips to Tahoe and such.

Not that hard really, once you get used to looking for stations. I have a friend who
has a diesel Jetta. He drives all over NorCal and does sales for a living. He fills up maybe twice a month. Once he gets down to 1/4 or 1/8th of a tank, he starts keeping an eye open - given the consumption rate, there is plenty of time.
VW supplies (or at least used to) a booklet with diesel stations in the US with every TDI. There are also websites and phone apps you can use. But with the slower consumption, it would take some effort to actually run out.

you're right. I started 'looking' for them recently when we briefly considered a new TDI
as my wife's new ride. should be no problem in the metro area.
as far as on the Interstate highways, there's nothing saying u can't pump diesel from a truck stop dispenser, correct? those are obviously everywhere.

Yup, truck stops do just fine in a pinch. Just make sure to use 1D or 2D fuel. 1D is for cold
weather and is less viscous. 2D is far more common. 4D is for heavy equipment and could harm a car engine.
Almost all diesel sold these days is ULSD (ultra low sulphur diesel). Cali and many other states require that all diesel be ULSD, but there are some corners of the country where you may encounter high sulphur diesel. Older diesels run just fine on the stuff, but as we found out with the V10 Touareg, the new engines won't last very long at all on it. The latest VW, Mercedes, and BMW diesels can't use it.
