Tahoe: question on snow chains
In the (few) times I've been up to Tahoe, having a FWD, I've taken chains along. Now I have an A4 quattro, would I need either chains or snow tires ? If I do, which one should I get ? I don't plan to go there more than 6 times for the whole of winter.Sorry if this is an FAQ, I did search the archives.

chains can damage your quattro
furthermore, it's unlikely you'll have enough suspension member clearance to install chains
get either all-season tires, or another set of rims with snow tires (can be found on craigslist for as little as $400)

At a minimum, get all season M+S tires, but true winters are MUCH better. Carry chains in the car,
but you'll never use them. They don't even have to fit, but you might be asked to show them.

CHP road conditions, from da archives.

Get all seasons, but carry chains just to pass an inspection if it happens.
Unless you are in back country, you typically will not encounter road conditions by Caltrans that need chains on 4wd with all season or M+S tires.

I was up this past wkd w/all seasons. Did just fine since the roads were not too thick w/snow.
didn't take it to the resorts though since my car is too low. Would've ate up a whole lotta snow. If you hit up the resorts when it's sunny, nothing to worry about w/all seasons. See the pics I posted a few posts down,

Just completed a 2 week ski trip incl Sierra's, Utah, and Colorado in an Avant
Pirelli P Zero Nero M&S. Was waived through every chain required location and had no problems the whole trip. At times 4-6 inches of snow on the road and tempatures as low as 6 degrees. You do not need chains and your owners manual tells you not to use them.
