Where can I get a mini DV video tape converted to mpeg?

Where is your old minidv camcorder? (m)
All minidv camcorders have an output (firewire) to stream to a PC. Once it's there, typically in MPEG2 format or other, you can easily upload it to youtube which, happens to re-convert again to their flash format.
I reckon you need to find someone with a minidv camcorder who can read your tape and connect it to their laptop and stream it down to their hdd.

there's a shop by house of falafels on stevens creek in cupertino that might do what you're looking
for.
they take outdated media and convert them into modern media. from there i assume it's easy to convert formats.
anyways, it's in the plaza across the street from sears/vallco. noticed it while eating lunch the other day.

actually, its not AVI. Mini DV is stores in a mpeg2 stream file (m2ts)..
its part of the standard of how FW supports minidv. The capture program at the other end determines the file format. Typically, if its a windows box and you use Microsoft software to capture it (or Sony Vegas/Pinnacle) it will store it as a AVI file, on the Mac it will store it in a Quicktime MOV or a dv file. But if you use a raw capture program, then it will capture as a m2ts file.

Steve, I can help you out. But I'm out on leave for 2 weeks.
We can do lunch when we get back. Shouldn't take me more than 1 hr to convert to h.264 or (pick you favorite format) codec.

ouch.. minidv = outdated? that's a bit extreme. Still good enough for HD quality and compression
is still a whole lot better than anything that goes to solid state disks. Unless of course you are capturing uncompressed HDMI out, and for that you need to carry around a computer with a RAID HD controller.
