so the camry's engine is blown.. among other problems i'm looking at aruond 3k to fix it up, but
it has 203,XXX already... my dad is trying to push me into another camry around the same year in the 3k range... and i'm pushing for him to sell me his 96 explorer which is around 166k but which he has had since day 1 and has already replaced pretty much everything.... although i'll get ****tier mpg, i still feel like the explorer is the better choice simply because i'll know the history? does that make sense?

Whats a 96 explorer worth anyway?
If you have 3k to spend I dont know if I would spend it on an Audi that only costs that much.
High maintenance costs on it that you might not want to spend $$ on.
And considering that as American cars age, everything breaks that hasnt already broken, Id stick with a Japanese make
