Default ?

So depending on the officers mood then? I hate WA State.

In extreme weather conditions, the Washington State Patrol will require all vehicles (except all-wheel drive) to install tire chains. However, the Washington State Patrol can require chains on all-wheel drive vehicles too.

Damn, make up your mind WA.

Default I have never had to put chains on any AWD I've owned, although I always carry a set with me...

I think that the road will normally be closed before AWD's would need chains.

Default It's impossible to put chains on the S4. There is not enough clearance between the suspension

uprights and the top of the tires....

Default Honestly, the should let the officers decide....

2WD + BLizzaks > AWD + S03s

really most 4WD cars have crappy 80K rated highway radials with horrible snow traction. And most high performance AWD cars have summer tires. Officers should be educated on tire ratings and be able to decide on an "educated" per case basis.

OR

They just make it so AWD/4WD needs chains too if they do NOT have M+S rated tires.

Default In Oregon, its required only when there's a "conditional road closure".

FWIW, I've never seen a "conditional road closure" in all my years of going to Mt Hood. But I have heard that it happens on rare occasions on I-5 through the Syskiyous.

Default Agreed. Still need to carry chains in your car though per WA law..

From 4. in link:

I have an all-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicle. When "Chains Required" signs are posted, do I have to use chains?
No. All-wheel drive vehicles are exempt from chain requirements when all wheels are in gear and are equipped with approved traction devices, provided that tire chains for at least one set of drive tires are carried in the vehicle. For more information, read WAC 204-24-050 .

Basically, no, but it's not a bad idea to carry them "just in case"

Default So to summarize: chains provide no benefit, are impossible to put on, but are required to be carried

Somehow the logic escapes me.
