Thanks for Quattrofest
This was a very well organized event with good emphasis on safety and adherence to the rules. Before lapping myself, I was priviledged to ride with AlanL in his S4 Avant. I'm sure I felt about like AlanL did when Randy Pobst was driving the car and he was in the passenger seat. Wow! My instructors Leigh A. and Bryan R. were very helpful and very persistent in trying to improve my novice driving on the track. Thanks again.

I second that!
An exceptionally well planned and implemented event. Learned a ton and met some great people. I can't wait to get my photo cd.
Well done!
Now I just need a few things....coil-overs, short shifter, and oh NEW TIRES!

Thanks for the ride in the wagon!
dojo_s4:
Really appreciated the laps with you and getting a better feeling for handling T-1/T-2 as a giant sweeper. Thanks. Great weekend, eh? And snow boarding, too. Dog.
Things I learned for next season...
1. The main thing I learned this weekend was that the back side of Portland is mostly a thottle-control 3rd gear section for me from T-1 through to the back straight. Also, T1 all the way through to turn in at T-3 is a single arc turn.
Here's what was comfortable for me: WOT in 3rd going into turn in at T-1, brush the brakes entering T-1, set the hands and hold on; brush the brakes at T-2 (security blanket move), back to throttle and just hold the turn until another brush of the brakes to set the suspension for the left hand sweeper at T-4. Then WOT through apex to turn in at T-4, moderate braking; increasing throttle to WOT pointing into T-5; over (or in the case this weekend pass by) the "Porsche bumps" in T-6 at WOT, upshift, and heading for fun fast turns at the bottom of the back straight.
I was previously instructed by my ProFormance coach to hit 2nd gear going into the 81 deg right hander at T-2 (mostly because my car has very tall 2nd and 3rd gears and lousy low-end torque); then Doc suggested that I hold 2nd through to T-4. However, I found myself bumping the rev limiter halfway between T-3 and T-4 and that it does not take that much brake at T-3 if you track out to the rumble strip edge and hold a steady turn line. Very smooth and much faster to stay in 3rd (as long as I sustain momentum throughout).
2. T-9 is a 2nd gear exit for my car. I tried to hold 3rd through T-9, however, my car does not have enough torque at 3500 RPM (which is about what I've got in 3rd right at turn in) to go WOT into the main straight. I lose some steam there through T-10. For now I think I'm better off hitting 2nd with this car entering T-9, WOT through T-10 and then upshifting exiting T-10 (where I've also been hitting the rev liimiter). Something for me to work on there.
3. Lifting throttle (and sometimes brushing brakes) while executing a low or moderate speed turn can help get the back end of my FWD car to rotate to apex. I experimented with this some at turn in to T-2 and at the left-hander exiting the "Festival Curves." I was coached to do a throttle lift at Pacific Raceways (for turn in to 5B), but it was fun to try it out on a different track.
Again, thanks dojo_s4 and everyone else associated with Quattorfest 2004. It was fun meeting some folks and getting more acquanited with others. See you in the Spring.
Since not everyone uses the same numbering conventions for Portland (as far as I can figure), here's the map I use for reference:

What's amazing in that picture is that all of us boarders (except one)...
are strapped in!
And we stayed upright and still enough for not one, but TWO pictures! :-) LOL
