2004 1.8T 6-speed - 01E?
Just wondering if we've determined yet for sure if the 6-speed in the '04 A4 is a 01E. If so, the real question then becomes, will it drop in as a replacement for the stock 5-speed 01A found in the earlier ('02-3) B6's, requiring nothing other than a tranny swap?
I know my other option is going with the S4 6-speed, but I understand that requires a driveshaft and rear diff from the donor car as well.
Anyone know what a CBL or CRB 6-speed is? Someone was posting these for sale elsewhere.

I don't think it's been determined yet....
my guess is that it's an 01E, and will still require at least a driveshaft.
Here's a breakdown of the trans codes for 01Es:

And even more info:

CRB is the coveted RS2 trans that we all wish we had. Pretty rare, and usually go for $3K and up, and require a little more work to install compared to the S4 trans.

I don't recall the exact trans codes, but sweet-talking a tech at the dealer will.....
get you far. All the trans codes, final drive ratios, etc are on AESIS, and will tell you everything you need to know.
I do remember the '04 B6 6 speed is available in the same final drive ratio (3.73:1?), and would require a center drive shaft & shift linkage/stabilizer for the transplant in my opinion.

I don't have anything available to garner information on the 04 transmissions but I would bet it is
still an 01E box. The link is to some info on the 02 and 03 01E B6 boxes

https://forums.audiworld.com/a4/msgs/1879333.phtml</a

Final drive on the B6 5-speed is a 3.889
I'm not sure if it's the same on the '04 6-speed, but what's not clear to me is why that matters, aside from speedo accuracy. Is it a software thing, or is there something in how the diff's of a different ratio count to the drive-train?

I think someone needs to try this in the near future.
There seams to be quite a few of us interested in this idea. If my tranny does cr@p out soon I might have to pioneer this one.

A different final drive means you have to change the rear diff as well
The S4s have a 4.111 as opposed to the 3.889 in the A4s, so we have to install an S4 rear end with an 01E box

But Why???
Thanks John, I recall you mentioned this before in our off-line conversation. I'm just wondering, like the proverbial 6 year-old, WHY? Is there an absolute technical requirement that the 4.111 rear and DS from the same car that donated the 01E be swapped in, or is it just a "practical requirement" as the gearing would otherwise be too wrong?

The two differentials (tranny and rear end) are mechanically linked. They must turn at the same
ratio front and rear. You can't have the front turning at a ratio of 4.111 turns to 1 and the rear at 3.889 turns to one ..
