Default A4 1.8t flywheel weight = 24.5 pounds!

Okay, a while back I posted that I didn't think flywheel weight explained all of the 1.8t's tendency to "hang" at high rpms when you shift. I still am not convinced, BUT...I did weigh a factory flywheel. 24.5 pounds is the heaviest flywheel I've seen on a four-cylinder motor.

My Mitsu. Eclipse (2.0 liters) has a 19.5-pound stock flywheel.

Default APR clutch/flywheel fixed the RPM hang.

I hated the pause I had to do when up-shifting on track to match revs. The 14 lb. flywheel that comes with APR's clutch fixed the problem. It still hangs a little coming out of first, but falls perfectly from other gears.

Default Did it help acceleration at all?

I don't think I have the equipment to drop the tranny in my house. How much labor was involved?

TIA

Default 10 hours at the dealership.

They charged me for 8 hours at $75 each.

My 50-70 mph acceleration times were the same before and after. But my timing technique has a large error factor, so it could have been a up to a couple 10ths faster without me being able to say for sure. I also had a hard time with my before test because of clutch slippage. Sorry I don't have better info. My actual numbers are at the house.

How about drivability, vibration, etc?

Default This, like everything, is a trade-off.

I am, in general, happy with the package. Being able to hold the big turbo's power is good and I really like the RPM dropping quicker. But it's not a nice comfy clutch. Trying to start off gently in traffic is hard. The car sometimes shudders or lurches forward. It's great for hard lauches but when your out on a date trying to drive gently it kinda sucks.

Springs, motor mount, exhaust, clutch, they're all trade-offs between comfort and performance. Choose carefully.

Default I wouldn't use 50-70 as a benchmark for the flywheel

Because you're already going pretty fast at 50 mph, the weight of the flywheel is negligible compared to the (levered) weight of the car, from the engine's point of view. What you SHOULD compare is first- or second-gear acceleration, where the weight of the flywheel is SIGNIFICANT compared to the much lower apparent weight of the car, because of the lower gearing in first.

(I'm re-reading this, and I don't know if I'm making any sense. I know what I want to say, I just don't know if I'm saying it. :^)

Inertia at a standstill, vs. already moving.
