A4 1.8T Transplant into Audi 80Q or 4KQ?
Hello all.
I am considering the purchase of a used Audi 80Q or a used Audi 4KQ. Here is my comparison table between them:
80Q 4KQ
3.55 3.60 - 1st
2.11 2.13 - 2nd
1.30 1.46 - 3rd
0.94 1.07 - 4th
0.79 0.83 - 5th
4.11 4.11 - final
3.2 3.11 - turns (lock-to-lock)
33.8 34.8 - turning circle
not MacP MacP - MacPherson struts
F/R lower CAs no F/R lower CAs - control arms
9.6" rear 7.9" rear - rear brakes
3.7 quarts oil 4.0 quarts oil - oil
8.5 quarts cool 8.45 quarts cool - cooling
99.9" 99.4" - wheelbase
0.7" 0.4" - delta track
176.3" 176.6" - length
66.7" 66.4" - width
54.8" 54.3" - height
5.0" 4.9" - clearance
2904 # 2824 # - weight
TORSEN Center Lockup Control - center diff
Auto Rear Lockup Control - rear diff
Stabilizer Rear No Stabilizer - stabilizer bar
Ind. Rear 4-Wheel Ind. - suspension type
Here is my listing of advantages for either car:
Audi 80Q
closer-ratio transmission
lower 3rd-5th gears
smaller turning circle
front/rear lower control arms
9.6" solid rear discs
8.5 quarts coolant
rear stabilizer bars
TORSEN center differential
Auto Rear Differential Lock
176.3" length
Audi 4KQ
higher 1st-2nd gears
smaller turns (lock-to-lock)
MacPherson struts
4.0 quarts oil
2824 pounds
99.4" wheelbase
0.4" delta track
66.4" width
54.3" height
4.9" clearance
By the way, I do not care about the power produced by the I-5. I plan on transplanting an A4 I-4 1.8T engine into whichever car I decide to purchase.
The thing that scares me about the Audi 4KQ is the manual operation of differential locking; it is all automatic on the Audi 80Q.
Which car would you recommend for the transplant?
Thank you,
Tim.

I hope you realize the 1.8T swap is not an easy thing to accomplish with earlier model Audis. I know one fellow who has swapped a 1.8T into an 80 FWD 4 cylinder. It cost him over $10k USD to do this. Tons of custom work is required to make this work. Subframe modifications, custom pilot bearing for the trans, clutch issues, wiring, and so much more
