I think there are only two....
one between 1 and 2 and the other between 3 and 4.
Since two cylinders don't fire at the same time, you can have one knock sensor for two cylinders and still know which one is knocking.

there was a discussion on VWvortex about why this isn't possible :(
the voltage is just the volume/loudness of the knock...........
the ECU "listens" through the knock sensor for a specific frequency, (iirc 5-8khz) and detirmines a knock from backround noise through a filtering system. i would have to tap into the ECU after this system, (if even possible) to get a signal line...PITA! ;P
