Anybody done a clutch/flywheel swap in an A4? How bad is the job? Details please thanks

You'll be the first =) Actually Carace did it himself. He has a Passat
but it should be simular other than the center driveshaft. drop him a line. He's on the Stage3 registry Steve Brown sent out.
AFAIK you need to drop the subframe, driveshafts and the tranny of course. I don't think you need any special tools other than the one to line up the clutch.

I'll let you know after this weekend - I'm starting Thursday night...
hoping to finish it up by saturday. The heat might slow me down, probably do most of the work at night.
I'm replacing the trans with a 2.8 unit, got an APR lightweight flywheel/clutch, and a new throw-out bearing from Clair Parts ($65 shipped)
Looking through the Bentley manual, it doesn't look too bad.
Summary:
1. A couple of engine connections need to be removed since it will be tilting back
2. Remove catalytic converter
3. Remove sensors from trans
4. Remove drive axles
5. Remove starter (the front bumper has to come off for this, BTDT)
6. Disconnect shifter linkage and rod
7. Disconnect driveshaft
8. remove engine/trans bolts
9. Support with jack
10. remove trans mounts
11. slide back a little, and lower just enough to remove slave cylinder (don't disconnect the line)
12. slide back until clear of clutch unit, drop trans.
Then remove clutch, replace, reinstall trans, and cross fingers hoping it still works
I'll let you know if I hit any snags. I've replaced the transmission in a couple of cars before (several times on one in particular, my XR) and the biggest PITA is aligning the input shaft with the clutch during installation.

I was just about to ask this same exact question.
I am also considering this install. How do we get the cat off with the stage 3? Can we reach all of the bolts without taking the whole kit out again? I've gotta start doing some research.

The final drive is the same, and the 1.8 and 2.8 trans cases are the same...
they have a dual pattern bellhousing, and the throwout bearing is the same. All good indicators One last test is to make sure the input shaft splines match the clutch disk, I'll be trying it before I begin, of course.
AFAIK, noone has attempted the swap, so wish me luck
