Default Anyone want to help me interpret these timing graphs.

My K04 chip has been pinging a lot lately, so I have been doing some logging to try and figure out what is going on. At first I thought it was a bad tank of Shell 93, but the pinging continued. I guess it was just the warmer weather. Some timing is still being pulled though.

From block 003

The timing retard, VAG-COM blocks 003 and 020

And here is pre cat 02V for reference. The car has adapted and leaned out a litte bit since this log was taken.

So from what I can figure the chip is pretty aggresive and I should probably take it easy in the heat and have a FMIC by next summer. Running with 310cc Bosch red tops and a 3 bar FPR.

Default A few degrees per cylinder isn't much. I would expect way more pull if it was pinging. Does that

chip doctor the knock tables?
What plugs are you running .. maybe a colder set?

Default Car wasn't pinging on the block 020 run

but it was with the same tank of gas a few days ago when it was about 15 degrees hotter.

As far as whether the chip doctors the knock tables, I have no idea. Any way to check with VAG-COM? I do recall seeing a stange number in one of the "lowest engine speed at misfire" blocks, like 9678 rpms. I would have to check again tomorrow to be sure though.

And I am running Bosch F6 DSR plugs gapped at .027, silver plugs one range colder than stock recomended for a KO4 setup by Shine Racing. I have a set of regular Bosch F7 LTCR plugs to try as well, but went with the colder set.

Thanks for the help.

Default I'd stick with the colder plugs. You could always take a look at block 020 when it is pinging to

see how much it is pulling back.
It could also be as simple as having carbon build up in the cylinders or on the valves that get hot enough with elevated IATs to cause issues. A MotorVac or BG Clean service would help that.
Maybe it is just too high IATs for that chip with teh puny OEM SMIC. FMIC might be in order ..

Default Or water injection, for that matter...400 bucks for a basic Aquamist setup and the sky's the limit

from there.

I'd do WI if I was in Nodge's shoes, it's cheap enough of a solution to warrant it, without worrying about pressure drop and basically double the cost of WI from a big FMIC.

Default Thanks for the input

Per your recomendation I've got a motorvac service scheduled for next week. As I am approaching 80K miles it's probably not a bad idea even if it doesn't help the pinging. But hopefully it will!

Default One thing I can virtually gaurentee .. you will like how SMOOTH it will make the car.

I've had it done on my 99.5 once (planning to go again soon) and it was very impressive. Even if it doesn't cure the pinging I think you'll feel it was worth the $.

How many miles did you have on the car when the clean-up was done?

Default ~60-65 k IIRC. In that range anyway. As you no doubt understand as a big turbo owner .. we can run

a little on the rich side and that serves to make an engine that is already prone to carbon issues, still more prone.
