Default Bailey Valve Dyno Tested!!!

We had a GIAC chipped 1.8T New Beetle in the shop today with the owner complaining about some loss of upper end power and some slight surging at part throttle. Since these are classic symptoms of a failing stock diverter valve, we took the opportunity to actually measure the power losses associated with the typical valve deterioration. We strapped the vehicle down to our dyno, did a base line pull with the stock diverter valve in place, installed the Bailey DV30 diverter valve, and did another dyno pull.

The results were pretty interesting! Though the symptoms of a failing or failed valve can be very obvious, it was amazing how much power throughout the curve was actually lost. As the revs and duration of boost increases, the stock valve begins to bleed boost, as low as 4000 rpms. By the power peak of 5500 rpms, there is a whopping 12 wheel horsepower loss with the faulty stock valve.

The Bailey DV30 is ultimately not a device that adds power over a healthy stock valve. Yet, the chance of finding and keeping a healthy stock valve on any of the VW/Audi turbo motors these days is pretty slim. Here is a quantification of what someone with a failing stock valve may be losing out on.

A.W.E. Tuning Bailey Valves

Interesting, I wonder how a new OE valve would have performed

Default Todd, faulty testing procedure! (more)

The baseline should have been a new OEM bypass valve, not a possibly broken or failing one. How can you quantify the improvements other than being able to state that the installation of the Bailey valve has resulted in a 12 bhp improvement over a failing or possibly failed bypass valve?

IMHO, you hurt your credibility by posting this kind of information.

I dont think so, since you wouldnt want to replace the leaking stock valve with another stock valve which would begin leaking later.

Default I suggest you reread my post again...

The *whole* point of the post was to show how the stock valve is a "weak link" and is consistently subject to deterioration. Picking a time where the deterioration has begun, but has not proceeded to the point where the valve is totally shot, we have shown a sample of how much power one may be missing.

To quote the last paragraph of my post:

The Bailey DV30 is ultimately not a device that adds power over a healthy stock valve. Yet, the chance of finding and keeping a healthy stock valve on any of the VW/Audi turbo motors these days is pretty slim. Here is a quantification of what someone with a failing stock valve may be losing out on.

Kind of funny how someone like you can accuse us of faulty test procedures when you can't even read carefully!

Default Foot-in-mouth syndrome has afflicted me big-time (more)

Todd, sorry about that- you're right, I can't read. :-)

I think your post can be a bit misleading, though, for those of us who are reading comprehension-challenged, like myself.

My apologies for being harsh.
