Default that's just because of your infamous midnight moding ;)

the rest of us have plenty of lights in our garages

Default I have my headlamp blazing 80% of the time I'm out in the garage.

They work great for sledding at night too. Which reminds me, I need to pick up some batteries for it today.

On the gloves: go for the Mechanics or similar glove. But make sure it's got the gel inserts over the knuckles and on the palm area. I use them when I go mtn biking too, but something a little more breathable would be nice for this purpose. If he's going to be wearing them in the heat of Iraq, I'd look for some with little holes along the fingers so his hands can get some air.

Default i'd actually NOT recommend those for working on a helicopter...

no lights, no gel, just basic or local reinforced.

Default Great recommendations in this thread -- one further point...

...send him more than one pair. I swear by the gloves, but eventually wear through the fingertips..
