changing the Thermostat good idea or bad idea ????
i live in Fl and as u know its hot as hell here. would putting in a new thermostat that would alow my car to run cooler improve the performance ??????????? thanks alot guys

I changed the thermostat,
put in a 160 degree thermostat and replaced the fan swith with a 180 degree switch. I live in Puerto Rico, constant 92 degree weather, and the car now runs a lot colder. Before the oil temp ran at around 210-215 now it runs at 175-180 and the water temp was always in the middle, now it runs a little before the middle.

Re: I changed the thermostat,
is there any disadvantage to running at a colder temp.... my car runs hot not sure of the temp will check. thanks guys what kind of thermo stat did u put in any special one?????

lower temp reduces efficiency
I presume the reduces performance.
Back when 1HP/Cubic Inch a high end target, cars ran 165F thermostats. Now that 100HP/L is a high end target (60% more), cars run at least 185F thermostats, some much more. Why would you want to go backwards?
Are you an engine designer?

Under hard acceleration
and with year round 90+ degrees I bet the car runs less efficient with the oil temp. climbing at 250 degrees than if it runs at 180-190. Also as a result the life of the motor and it's components would be extended rather than literaly cooking and melting. Also you will be extending the life of all rubber hosing which will be less likely to crack and leak. My personal opinion, if chipped you are definetly going to slam the gas on every chance, then why not let your engine run less hot and with less fatigue.

However, lower coolant temps improve thermal capacity...
...and personally I'll take a *slight* reduction in fuel economy for being able to keep those oil temps below ~220F.
Can you have too much thermal capacity in a 1.8T? Depends on end use (and frequency and duration of those WOT runs) I guess.
