Got an oil change from Jiffy Lube..ended up costing me $101.00..
I need to know if an oil change is done in the same way as other cars, if yes I think this was the last time i will get one from Jiffy. They dont carry Audi oil filters, so I bought one at the delaer, that was $23.00. I dont want to pay 450 for an oil change so I went to Jiffy, they charges $81 for Synthetic oil (including additional oil over 5 quarts.).
Do any of you guys change your own oil, if yes please give some pointers...thanks a bunch.

What type of car?
No matter what type of car, you got taken for a ride.
Check out carmadillo.com for filters, drain plugs, and drain plug washers (the washer should be changed with every oil change...most people's are probably never changed). You can get a bosch filter for about $7.50. Get your oil from Walmart of Target and you shouldn't have to pay more than $6/quart or so.
I think there is a FAQ section that will tell you how to change the oil, but long story short:
1. Jack up car using jackstands
2. Remove bottom engine cover
3. Remove oil plug
4. Let oil drain
5. Remove oil filter
6. Let oil drain
7. Reinstall everything in reverse order making sure that you put some oil in the filter and on the filter gasket. Also make sure to only hand tighten the filter or you'll have a very hard time getting it off next time.
8. Add oil
9. Check oil level
10. Start car and check for leaks
11. Check oil level
12. Go for a 15 minute drive
13. Check oil level
If you don't think you can do this, go to your favorite mechanic and ask what they charge for an oil change using synthetic. It shouldn't be more than $55 or so. If that doesn't work, take it to the dealer and it shouldn't be too much more.

Re: What type of car? Its a 99 A6 Avant..Thanks for step by step instructions
I will try to do it myself...Any special tool to unscrew oil filter and any torque specs on oil filter and oil drain plug would be greatly appriciated.

Not sure about the torque specs for your car...but
For the oil filter, I hand tighten it. I also use an oil filter wrench to get it off. I got my wrench from Sears for about $10. There are different size wrenches, so take a filter with you when you go to get one. If you don't have an oil filter wrench, you may end up doing the "jam a screwdriver into the filter" trick to get enough leverage to remove the filter.
As for the drain plug, the spec for a '97 1.8T is 50 Nm or 36.9 ft/lb. I would presume, but am not sure that your car would be the same. But look at it this way...do you really think the guys at Jiffy Lube are torquing the bolt to spec? You'll be able to tell when its tight enough...just don't overtighten it and be careful not to cross-thread it. Just make sure to check for leaks after you are done and while the car is running.
You'll also want to get a oil drain pan (probably the incorrect terminology) that you can use to collect the oil after you remove the drain plug. These things can be found at any auto parts store for less than $10 and make life a lot easier (I got tired of catching my oil in a tupperware container!)

synth. oil change at my dealership: $50....
$50 = $31 work (including Audi filter) + $19 oil (4 quarts Mobil-1, brought it in)
I am in Iowa, which is pretty cheap state, but still: $100 is probably "ouch" anywhere!
