Default not really.....

the battery only provides 12V, the altenator provides 14.4V (usually)

more voltage gives better spark and more fuel from the fuel pump

Besides, the altenator for the most part isn't always charging, as long as you don't have the stereo blasting, A/C on, and the headlights on, it will only be consuming a small amount of HP, not much more than if you disconnected.

And unless you totally remove it, you'll still have losses due to the belt being attached to it.

Default good point about the spark quality...i didnt think of that.

i think any benefit would only happen if the alternator and battery were rated the same.

the HP loss from spinning the alternator is small.

if there is electrical load on it, i would think the loss is high.

Default well of course, but similiar to john's post, you are putting the entire draw of a running car

in the hands of something you know will slowly drain and provide less and less power in a situation where you are beating on the car...

Default doesn't the ignition run on 8v?....

iirc only when starting do the coils get 12v. also nasty car runs a draining system for 600 mi.

Default nope, 12V

The older cars, back in the days of points, ran on 6V.

Default i figured " the ballast resistor is dead"....

it would seem to me it would be a good idea to run you ignition at slightly reduced voltage to insure stability.

Default considering the spark plug fires with thousands of volts....

reducing the initial voltage would only hurt
