Default idle problem

I have a '96 A4 that will idle at 8-900 rpm, then suddenly decrease to about 200 rpm. Sometimes it drops so low that the engine will stall. Any suggestions on what could cause this problem, and can I fix the problem without going to a dealer or mechanic?

A dirty Idle Stabilization Valve is often the culprit, check the archives.

Default This is a known problem for which a technical bulletin exists!

Give this Technical bulletin to your mechanic:<ul><li><a href="http://tech.vw.com/audipdf/a240001.pdf">Engine, Fluctuating Idle or Idle Speed Too Low</a></li></ul>

This TSB isn't for a '96 A4.
