Default Logs galore. Poll on timing logs. Tech advice requested ....

Hello folks,

I have been sent a craplaod of logs since having written a thread on datalogging and I am looking for some unbiased interpretations from those who are tech savvy on the performance tuning of the 1.8T motor. I would like to leave the tuner names out of this thread altogether if we can. I have been asked by a couple of owners to help get to the bottom of why they dont feel their cars are running right. I can provide logs of other variables if needed. Please help some folks get some ideas of what their cars are doing, good or bad.

All cars are either running a big injector chip or a K04 chip and are running on the pump fuel for their program. Some have added octane beyond the requirements of their program and some have added an FMIC where indicated.

Car 1 is running premium fuel for the octane and has a FMIC...

Car 2 is running 93 octane on it's 91 octane chip program...

Keep in mind most of the above are running one to two heat range cooler plugs reportedly gapped to .028 to try and help. Some of the folks report hearing a pinging noise, one reports a banging noise but cannot be certain what it relates to at all. My be a hardware component.

Any advice on how these things are ok or not or any in depth knowledge about how it looks would be helpful.

cheers! Mike

They all have way too much timing pull.

Default Are you sure this couldnt be ok? ....

I have been discussing this with a tuner who states it is fine if the knock voltage is ok, but ive heard cars not only audibly ping with knocks of <20 but also knock loudly with knocks that appear normal. I've also seen cars running a LWFW or a upgraded motor mount, or a loose exhaust, running very high knock with no timing problems or pinging so I was confused what to make of this. Would you say that this kind of timing pull COULD be a good thing or is definitely not? Why?
Thanks Mike.

cheers! Mike

Default I think there is much more to it then just block timing pull and knock sensor readings

I could make block 020 pull no timing but have high knock sensor readings, I could also make block 020 pull back the max 12.8 on all cylinders but yet not get any ping.

As for most running just normal setups, I think anything above 6-8 degs of pull back is too high.

B5 or B6? Steady 7 degrees or a couple little "spikers"?

Default relatively steady in the high end of the rpms...

i am not sure what you are trying to prove here and dont think you quite understand what you are either.... if you think ping is an issue i had an AMS chip that ran 1 bar of boost and next to no timing and it pinged like a bastard, timing correction was in the high single digits up to 11... i ran it for 45,000 miles at which point i tested my compression and leak down tested the engine. both were 100 percent factory perfect. The FX (which you are wholeheartedly trying to discredit) in some cases (some dont have it at all) has the exact same ping that my car did, it is not a detrimental effect (from my own personal experiences through 5 1/2 years of ownership) and if you look at knock voltages in my case and with the FX they are in the low to mid teens which my stock S4 is in also. please enlighten me here, i dont think you understand how all of these variables mesh together to paint a picture...
