Default MTM Stage 3++ update...

We got the turbo in place. It is a gt28r. It bolted up perfectly and there are no clearance issues as of yet with the wastegate and the motor mount braket. This was surprising. I had my metal guy standing by with everything from a plasma cutter to torches and he was sadly dismissed from duty.

Two minor glithes so far should you all try this...

1. The exhaust manifold gasket blew out on the test run. This is very common and just requires a new and beefier gasket. To be replaced tomorrow.

2. The gt28r does not come with the same vacuum hose fitting as the K04 and in the confusion of trying to direct my mechanic (an awesome guy from A-1 Auto in Seminole Florida) he routed the vacuum line off of the manifold directly to the wastegate of the gt28r bypassing the N75 valve. This means boost is set at a maximum of around 13psi. Needless to say the car did not feel as fast as a K04 boosting 28psi. Probably mostly due to the torque supplied by my high boost on the K04.

So, as of tomorrow we will be simply replacing the exhaust gasket and running the vacuum line up to the N75 where it should be. This will mean hello to 23psi of boost or even 28psi of boost should I be daring enough to tune it for the Monaco N75K valve.

The current test drive boosting 13psi resulted in NO codes being thrown and NO leaks. I was surprised by this as it has always been my experience when upgrading turbos that at the very least a boost hose bursts or a coolant line pops. No surprises with these folks. I wish I could say more about the little known installers at A-1 Auto.

Future modifications will include running a 3" MAF with custom tuned software from Greedspeed and a special part not yet ready for public release, but I can tell you all that it will be very nice The other future mod is running a larger exhaust manifold with the Greedspeed "special part" and reshaping the stock (hollowed) cat to retain a "smog compliant" look.

I shall keep you all updated. No secrets here. Please keep your fingers crossed or pray to the God of your choice for me

Cheers! Mike

UPDATE NO. 2 (the following day, today)

Resulted in a blowing the exhaust gasket again. It's just a tiny little exhaust leak that make the car sound like an M3. The car is boosting to 15psi because a map that controls boost and throttle is set to turn up the boost on the K04 at around 2500rpms where the gt28r cant do that until arond 3500rpm so i have to have that map changed to really get this thing to rock. Currently the code being thrown is the 16683 under boost code. Right now it feels about as powerful as the MTM stage 3 while running about 7-10 psi LESS boost so with Anthony's help it looks like we could have something as early as next week. We will be overnightning some programs back and forth until we get if perfectly dialed in. cheers! Mike

Default cool....why not run a boost controller of some kind

I wouldn't run 28 psi just for kicks if I were you.

Default I was hoping to have the car actually tuned correctly...

I think MBCs are no doubt helpful for people having software issues when experimenting with larger turbos as well as for those who are drag racing and will constantly be monitoring their car and making adjustments as needed, but I am shooting for more of an MTM style bulletproof tune that can self adjust due to the correct programming being in place. This may be a lot to ask, but ther are plenty of people coming to market soon that will have such a kit so i'm trying not to demand any less of mine. cheers! Mike

Default Thanks Ray...BTW, when does the APR hit it's boost peak??

I'm used to the quick spool of the K04 and now i'm having to wait til like 3900rpm before i hit my boost peak? What is the APR like? Thanks bud. cheers! Mike

Default APR hits full boost around 3500 RPM

so for me, with boost controller, I hit 19-20 psi. I think some other years/models run a little more boost, or at least spike to higher boost then sustain. I have an electronic boost controller and divorced wastegate test pipe, and I really didn't notice much difference in lag with either. I guess the APR high flow cat works well.
