Need Max power
I think you have to figure out what you really want and perhaps get a ride in a stage III/T-28 A4 so you can see what kind of power to expect...
In the end - the Automatic has got to go - IMHO
ok ill be a little clearer
Im planning the car before i get one. So manual or automatic are both choices currently. Im gonna gut it and do weight mods to compensate for the weight of the car. The car needs to be fairly quick to do like a weekend a road racing circuit, no drag racing.
As far as the transmission goes, I hate manuals, im only 18 and i guess its my experience but I know how to drive a manual, and have a few times and I just suck at it basicly. I always am having a hard time trying to decide when to upshift and downshift at the optimum times. It sounds stupid to screw over the shifting performance up with an auto, but I just cant handle a manual. Maybe a tip chip is in order? Also whats wrong with the tiptronic if 350+ hp porsches use them?
oh almost forgot:in response to the comment about taking a ride in an a4 with a stage 3 or t28, how fast can the a4 go with either of these kits?
The A4 is heavy which makes it slower than comparable cars, but it is the luxury that makes it worth it. In my opinion - if you want to pull out the amenities, you may as get a WRX - lighter and faster with more potential.
In terms of the trannie - everyone has trouble until they get used to a stick... Eventually it becomes second nature and you will wonder how you ever considered an automatic. A stick can handle more HP, it is faster, can improve handling, and basically improve the overall driving experience... re-consider it.
The Tiptronic needs a Tip Chip for a K04 and needs a Level 10 upgrade (~$1000 iirc) for a stage III/T-28. You can do a search for info on that. BTW - I believe that the Tiptronic that is in the porsche is a different unit.
I included a link to the A4 timeslip database - it seems that you can do mid 13s w/ a stage III/T-28. I am still waiting on my T-28 - then I can tell you from personal experience. A K04 can do mid 14s - w/ a bad clutch my best was 14.8.
Use the search feature there is an unbelievable amount of info here... Good luck!!

A4 Timeslip Database

My engine plans so far now are:
97 or 98 a4 1.8T quattro
T28
FMIC with watercooler
http://www.autospeed.com/cgi-bin/browse.cgi?category=705&
illegal exhaust-if they dont check it aint illegal
maybe underdrive pulley?
Last thing - I would try to get a 98.5 if your budget allows. There are improvements in the A4 along the way - with 98.5 and especially 99.5 having the bigest number of changes. Do a search for more info.

Level 10 upgrade

practice manual, it will become easier with more shifts.
