Default need some opinion on this problem...

My car is running lean and it goes in and out of limp mode with CEL. DTC 17536. It goes into limp mode when I do city driving, as I drive on the highway, it goes back to normal. Also, turning on AC will make it go to limp mode. Seems like the hoses are fine. I think I'm about to put in my stock intake and chip and bring it to the dealer to figure it out.

Default I think the problem with cold air intakes...

is they do away with the velocity stack on the end of the MAF.

This can cause MAF misreadings, and I have a feeling the DBW MAFs are more sensitive than the nonDBW MAFs

Sounds like vaccuum leak. If it was MAF problems, wouldn't highway/WOT driving be an issue?

Default i'm testing this problem w/ vag-com right now

i have almost the same thing with my '01 gti 1.8t

i believe that the problem is the MAF... to make a long story short, see this link
http://www.club18t.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5661

i'm going to test some more tomorrow and i should be able to determine if it is the MAF or not... I'm going to clear out the DTCs with my vag-com and run the car with the MAF unplugged. If i don't get code 17536 i'm going to have to say it's the MAF. If i do get 17536 w/o the MAF, i'm gonna have to think of something else to check. IMHO, i don't believe it is the o2 sensor(s).

Default I hope it's nothing major...

I'm put my stock socket chip back in right now and see if it throws a code. Since I'm still under warranty, I'm going to have the dealer take care of it. I'm back to stock as of engine mods just to play it safe. My 40k service is coming up, so this is a perfect timing for this.

Default it's definately the MAF

I cleared out the DTCs with the Vag-Com today, then unplugged the MAF. After I drove around all day with the MAF unplugged, the ECM didn't throw fault 17563. I'm going to replace the MAF and all should be well again.
