Default Possible MAF Problem/Driving w/ MAF Unplugged

Well my car went into soft limp mode over the weekend and the code I pulled was "Band 1 Mixture Adaptation (mult): system too lean" I did some research and noted that this is commonly associated w/ needing to either clean or replace the maf element. I also read that I can drive w/o limp mode if i unplugged the maf. I did so before clearing codes and later checked dtc and found the same error except this time it was "system too rich" Is this ok? Also does anyone notice that the car seems to run almost twice as strong w/ the maf unplugged? Is there any damage that can be done driving like this long term? Thanks for the help.

Default That's fine...just not too long....>>>>

clean or replace the MAF as soon as possible and take it easy driving. Use standard computer board cleaner available at Radio Shack...make sure MAF is dry before running the car again...

Well my BAMM has arrived so I guess I'll clean the element when I install it. Thanks!

Default just about...use the electronics cleaner which leaves no residue...spray soak it, shake it dry

and if possible, use a hair dryer or heat gun on low, to completely dry it out before putting it back in.

Default I got a CEL within 25 miles of driving with the MAF unplugged. >>>

The code was fairly obvious, something about the fuel-air mixture reading being wrong. Went away right after I plugged it back in.
