Other then a compression test, what else should i have done to make sure

Just general maintenance.
check all the vacuum lines for cracks, make sure the hoses are in good condition, all the electrical connections are free of dirt and corrosion. Replacing the fuel filter isn't a bad idea either.
Check for fault codes, make sure the car is running 100% before throwing more power into it.
If the TB is due to be replaced soon, then I'd replace it a little sooner for peace of mind.

time and money reserve
if you drive aggressively, you will wear out parts faster (brakes, clutch, etc)
you should know going in that EVERY little weird noise and vibration will freak you out for a while and you'll need extra time to debug through them til you get comfortable with a big turbo kit.
MAKE SURE THE INSTALL IS DONE WELL! if you do it or anyone else does...if not, every problem you have will be attributed to a "poor install" (most times it is true, but a poor install will make ALL your vendors adopt a defensive position against the install if anything goes wrong...and it's hard to blame them). don't cut corners.
car in good shape + good install = MUCH happier camper later.
