Porsche Big Red Kit : changing brake pads is a royal PITA
yeah I know everyone says it's a piece of cake. But it's a fact that changing pads on a Porsche Big Red kit is not a cake walk like the OEM S4 brakes.
Okay, I got a locking wrench to squeeze out the pad holder and I shorted the wear sensors which are useless for me since I'm always checking my brakes, but those pads are locked in solid.
Someone told me that Porsche uses pad dampeners that wind up adhering to the pads and make removal impossible w/o removing the calipers. Is this true? I got ONE pad out 1/3 of the way and when I gave up, a metal disc got pushed partially out. I think this must be a dampener, if not what the heck is that thing and why would it slide out like that?
Any suggestions????

uh...wierd. I only had problems with the retainer spring on my 993's. Mine also had no "damper pad" on them, with a factory pad or with the Pagids.

great idea, thanks. I got full thickness pads in there, so it's still a PITA.
Also, I noticed that the red caliper paint just crumbles at the slightest touch. Could be because the bleeder valved wasn't fully tightened at install and fluid leakage occured.

never had this problem. everything pops in and out easy.
takes me 20 minutes for both sides, including removing/putting back the wheels. I do this often so maybe I've sorted out all the little problems.
make sure you lube everything up (wd40), especially the long pin, when you put it back together

Liam

I agree w/ the others..it really "should" be easy.
Simply use channel locks or vice grips to release the brake pad holder. Then I use a large flat head screw driver to gently press the pistons back in the calipers and pull out pads with my fingers. If you are using the pad dampeners which I am you need to use a small flat head screw driver to separate the adhesive from the back of the pad and then use the larger screw driver to compress the pistons.

got the narrow vise grip, so the holder is not a problem.
How do you wedge in the screwdriver w/o scratching up your caliper paint like crazy! In other words, how to get those pistons pushed back (it was easy on the OEM S4 calipers).
