S4 AVANT first driving impressions crosspost with S4 forum
Well, I must say that appearance wise it is a true european sports wagon. Nice lines, mine was silver, and body contouring. It drove like the sedan S4. It did not feel like you had a rear end attachment until you looked into the back and felt like you were in a cave, hello back there It seemed rather quite with some wind noise in the driver side front window seal at 80mph, I am sure this differs from car to car.
Pros:
-Nice power delivery
-Nice body styling
-Nice interior lay out
Now for the cons:
-The back seat has next to no head room. Me being
6'2" might not of helped :P I guess all avants
are like this to compensate for the sunroof.
-Short leg room
-Quite a bit of body role, similar to sedan S4
-No full size spare as in the S4 sedan
-And the cabin shuttered when you had the sunroof open and were in the range of 30-40mph.
Out of all of the cons I would have to say the sunroof takes the cake. It is the same sound if you were to hold down the wind deflector bar, on your sedan, while going 40mph. The sales person just said: "You just need to crack a rear window." I say properly design a sunroof for the avant, especially when you are spending $40K on a car.
Other than that the car seemed to be pretty nice. Just thought those of you interested in the avant may of found some of this to be of help when you go out and test drive one.

That's interesting about the sunroof.
In my A4 Avant, I don't have those troubles. I can cruise on the hiway with the sunroof open and no shudder in the cabin. Why would the S4 be different? Odd.

It is kind of funny that they carry the same body, but...
the one I drove has the sunroof deal. The spring buffer bar was up and functional. Maybe there needs to be a higher one? Nice looking car though.

I get the sunroof shudder, but very rarely, on my A4
Try cracking a rear window open/closed, or else close/open the sunroof itself slightly. Sounds like Rich doesn't drive fast enough. :-)
