Default smoking 1.8t??

I have a friend with an aeb 1.8t engine and it is smoking real bad and does not hit full boost. he did drive it home and said it seems to be ok mechanically, would that be a sign that the turbo is shot or would it be some type of internal seal or something?

Default Sounds like a head gasket. I think the turbo water passages...

are completely separate from the exhaust, unlike the oil, which is separated by seals.

A compression test would let you know for sure.

I know how to change them, but that's about it.
