Default Snub mount comparison: Stock vs. Stock vs. Greedspeed vs. APR

The black mount is the stock mount in my 97 A4.
The orange mount is a stock mount out of a 2001 A4.
The red mount is the Greedspeed mount.
The blue mount is the APR mount.

Here are the outside diameters:
97 Stock mount: 2.67" (2.60" min)
01 stock mount: 2.70" (2.57" minus the nubs)
Greedspeed mount: 2.50"
APR mount: 2.78"

My snub mount housing measured 2.80" I know they changed the housing on the newer cars, but not sure which year they switched over (2000?)

Now the big question, Which mount to use?

You can see my old stock mount is oval, having been abused for about 60K miles. It's also way too thin on the outside, so it doesn't offer a whole lot of resistance to movement.

The newer stock mount is much better, it's thicker, and is a different material, I can't really tell if it's a harder material or not.

The APR mount is the largest one. You can see I actually ground some material off of it to get it to fit better. It's almost rock hard.

The greedspeed mount is smaller than all the other mounts, even the stock ones. It's also just as hard as the APR mount (maybe even slightly harder)

My experiences:
Old stock mount:
Absolutely terrible. Recommended for Grandmas

New stock mount:
I like it. It's firmer than the old stock mount, but not as harsh as the APR mount. I prefer it over the APR, but that could be because of the awful experience I had with the APR mount.
It does seem to have lost some of it's firmness now that I have more miles on it (~20K miles)

APR mount:
I could not get this thing to stop vibrating. I had to remove a bunch of material to make it somewhat liveable, but that took away a lot of it's effectiveness.
And it gets worse. The vibration was bad enough that it caused all the bolts holding the back of the shroud to the motor to loosen up, I even had the head of one of the bolts broken off.
Unfortunately, two of the bolts for the shroud plate go into the crankcase. When the one loosened, it let oil leak out. I could not find the source of my oil leak, until I pulled my motor out to rebuild it.
Part of the reason I had so much trouble with it could be because of the lightweight flywheel, it has a slightly rougher idle than the stock flywheel.

I have yet to use the greedspeed mount, it's going in next. I'm not sure if the smaller size is a pro or con. I'm guessing it will won't vibrate like the APR, but I'm not sure if it will be all that effective in controlling movement because of the larger gap.

None of these mounts is ideal. I think a mount the same size and shape of the APR mount, but made in hard rubber, would be a very good mount.
I also have an idea for another mount, but it's pretty far down on the "to-do" list.

I should also say I have a DTS installed now, I've only used the newer stock mount with it.

Default Remove the DTS...snub will be much happier...

i couldn't take the snub + DTS...i got vibrations following the revs...keys rattled lightly at idle, etc...

Love your posts...you keep this up im gonna show up on your doorstep with a trunk fill of parts, a case of beer, and a favor to ask of you

Cheers,
Sameer

Default At least 2 SIII guys that I know of have said the same thing about the snub+dts...

I think it's a bad combo for the 1.8T motors. Howerver I rode in a buds 30V V6 with the DTS and then with the DTS+snub and it was better with both and had no vibrations. Maybe it's just cause the 1.8T is a rough little motor...compared to the oh so smooth V6 anyway.

Default Agreed, and with the big turbo i think the engine thrashes more than chipped KO3...

so if i were chipped KO3 id go DTS, if i was big turbo id do snub mount.

I had mine professionally installed, still vibrates a little, but definitely not too bad.

Cheers,
Sameer

Default The bad vibes I had with the APR was without the snub. I've got the greedspeed in right now....

in combo with the DTS, and it's running OK. I haven't really had a chance to drive it hard though because of all the snow (and no snow tires)

I think you're going to need more than a case if you come over

Default Do you think the smaller size of the greedspeed snub will cause it to not perform as effectively as

the apr mount? Isn't a somewhat close fit going to be better?

Default It's hard to say...

I'm not sure. A closer fit is better, but if it's too close, it's Vibration City.

It would be nice to be able to put an APR mount in a lathe or something, and reduce it's size to about the same as stock.

Default Or better yet, it would be nice if...

APR made the right fit in the first place=P And then I wouldn't have to shave my stupid mount to make it fit=P That's their responsibility imo.
