Default tech performance questions(longish)

Hi everyone.
My name is Lou. I am buying an A4 soon and just had a couple questions for those more "audi knowledgeable".
I have a 500hp 92 300zx TT, and am selling it to get a more practical car.
I've done quite a bit of research and as soon as I buy the A4 I will upgrade the wheels to 18", The susp. to h&r coilovers and the engine with ko4 upgrade and a 1.5 chip intake, exhaust...etc.
So I guess my questions are...
1. Is it possible to install a boost controller of any kind?
2. Does the traction of AWD in the quattro compensate for the added weight? (i.e. 60foot times, 1/4 mile times)
3.Is there a larger turbo upgrade than the ko4? I realize the fuel enrichment issue.
4.How much hp can the stock internals withstand...How well built is the 1.8t's built.(i.e. rods, pistons)
Ultimately I would like to get my a4 into the mid to high 12's...possible?
Any insight or comments are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lou

Not even the S4 with Chip & Exhaust will get you into the 12's.

1. Boost controller is possible but it's a bad idea...there is a much more reliable and sophisticated boost controller...it's called the stock ECU. Have a professional company like APR, Neuspeed...GIAC etc do the coding for you.

2. The Quattro hooks up nicely...60 ft times that rival almost any 2wd car on the strip.

3. Yeah there's way bigger than the K04...you've got Hybrid K04's using diff compressor wheels...you've got other 3K Warner parts like the K16 kit which ABT make 285 BHP there are the kits from APR which use variations of the Garrett GT25 those range from 280 BHP to 310 BHP...there are 2.0 Liter conversions which should net you something like 400 BHP maybe a bit more.

4. It's built pretty well, better than most things you'll find on the market. I think the Crank and Pistons are forged. If you're buying a 2001+ car you'll get the 9.3:1 compression engine Vs the older 9.5:1 part which is good for the boost happy crowd.

5. You will probably NEVER get into the 12's with any of the setups I've mentioned...the car is simply too heavy and not geared properly for that. Maybe if you were willing to gut the **** out of the car to get the weight down...lighter exhaust...lighter brakes...carbon fiber hood and trunk...loose the rear seat...loose the spare...loose the carpet...loose all sound deadening...you get the picture (it would look like a race car. Do the 2.0 liter conversion...an you might just tickle the bottom end of 13 seconds.

James R.

Default Yes it will cost you DEARLY I just figured that since he mentioned the K04 he had higher hopes for

this car than can that can be acheived for less than 10,000 I was trying to let him down lightly.

James is right about the boost controller. The ecu is a much better controller. I would not go to a boost controller unless I had a huge turbo. The Ko3 and the ko4 turbos need to have the boost cut down at higher RPM's. Chip programmers do this in the chip.

I run 2.0 60 ft times at the strip. When my clutch was good I could get into the 1.9's. That's damn good for any streetcar.

There are larger turbo upgrades out there other than the Ko4. The Ko4 is an inexpensive kit that will net 220-250 hp depending on whose kit you go with and the rest of your setup. Trq will be from 265 -300 ft lbs. past that it starts to get expensive.

The stock internals seem to take 300-350hp if you're careful. Detonation is the key here.

My car has run 14.2 @ 97. Ultimately it will run 13.80 but that's about all you will get with a ko4 turbo. Most ko4 setups tend to run 15 flat depending on the setup and the driver. These cars are not easy to drive at the strip. The gearing is not setup for 1/4 and the car is heavy. My car is 3160lbs. It's just not a good car for strip use. There are many other cars out there that will be much faster for way less money if that's all your concerned with. It is a damn good all around package but its not a killer at the strip.

12's are going to be allot of work and tons of money. The tranny is not that strong to take that kind of abuse. 13's will also cost an arm and a leg.

So it comes down to how much money you want to dump into it. Anything is possible but its not going to be cheap.

Default You could get there with an APR Stage III or III+ kit...

www.goapr.com

I think the ABT kit might pull off high 13's as well...but it's too expensive for what you get.

Default mid to high 13's with APR Stage III

Agree with the other post's that the A4 1.8t is not the optimal drag racing car. On the other hand, it's extremely versatile. i.e. Daily driver, weekend track car, canyon carver, etc.

I did test my car at the dragstrip to see exactly what she could run. I ran a 13.8 @~100 mph after only two runs because of the rainy conditions. (not bad for pump gas, subwoofer and spare in the trunk, 18 inch wheels)

Now with the stage III+ turbo, I will make a final visit to the dragstrip in a couple of weeks and I will post the results.
