Default For us non-racers...is there any advantage/disadvantage for slotted or x-drilled rotors?

Time to replace worn stock units. Aftermarket ones actually seem to be less expensive than OEM. Does it matter which I buy...slotted or x-drilled...for daily driving? I think the x-drilled look cool but will go with function over form.

Thanks all.

NON racer.. no diff. slots and x-drilled are for quicker removal of heat.. that is all.

Default Thanks, "Sneaky". Did you still have the set of rims to loan for a few hours?

You responded to my request a few weeks ago.

Default Pad life is worse with cross-drilled.

I went with cross-drilled rotors to replace my warped stock ones. They were the only ones I could get on short notice. I found no improvement in fade resistance and the pads are wearing much faster.

Default I went with both - but I seem to get the feeling that the slotted helps reduce wet brake fade

Default uhmmm, no. Slotted rotors are to help evacuate offgassing caused..

when the pads superheat. the gasses created actually form a barrier that inhibits the pads from fully contacting the rotor, much like hydroplaning. The slots (and holes for that matter) give a means for the gas to clear and not me trapped.

A simple experiment that demontrates this is to heat a pan whee it very hot, then take a wet paper towel and wipe it across the hot pan. The water that vaporizes and forms a vapor layer will cause the paper/sponge to skim across the surface like a airboat or air hockey puck. water drops on a hot pan will also dance on the surface for the same reason.

I've been searching around for some x-drilled front rotors for my coupe...the company I contacted didn't have the correct size.

Default Re: Pad life is worse with cross-drilled. Expound on 'Worse'?

Your pads lasted a month? 6 months? A year, 2 years less, than with ordinary rotors?

My pads lasted 7+ years with drilled rotors! Plus the drilled rotors were hardly touched by wear!

Sounds like a poor choice in pads.

Default I think the reason Porsche adopted cross drilling was to reduce unsprung weight...and to help with

off gassing...but the primary goal was reduced unsprung weight. Even they will admit that the holes reduce (slightly) pad life and increase the the likelihood that cracks may form in the rotor...they cast the holes in (Brembo) which helps a lot with the cracking problems...but they're still worse than solid or slotted rotors in that dept.

Default I'm running mine on the track.

7 years! That's great. My choice of pad is definitely not good, Mintex C-Tech. I had a set on the stock rotors which lasted 5 or 6 days on track. I had fade problems. It was a set of Pagid Orange pads that warped the rotors. I put another set of C-Techs on with the slotted rotors and they are 2/3 gone after one track day. Granted, it was a day with two drivers, but it was wet all morning and my father was not driving her hard. I was and had the old fade problems again too. So the drilled rotors didn't help with fade and wore the pads faster. YMMV.
