Default variable cam timing on a 1.8T... how much gain ?

I've understood that its actually possible to change the cam tensioner on the 1.8T to a progressive one (variable) from a engine with the "vanos" system. Like the 1.8i ADR engine.

I was thinking. How much gain could one expect from this ?
How many degrees could this system possible change the inlet cam with ?

Its a really interessting thought I think. At least with big turbo and running aftermarked cams and adjustable gears...

I'd have to get a way of controlling and driving the solenoid thoug. RPM-decided is probably best, but boost or load would also be possible...

Any thoughts?

All you other bigturbo guys, give me some input?
Mike, Mark, John, Lucas ??

Default Not sure since I never gave it a thought.

I went with a AEB head with just shrick cams.

Default me neither, untill now...

I also have an AEB head...
But you know, you can just get this tensioner, and mount it on your AEB head. No other parts needs to be changed.
It will work with no other mods I believe.
(Well, unless you get some "control" for it, it wont engage ofcourse)
When "engaged" (at higher revs)
you'll probably have some increase in torque...
How much I really have no idea about.
But if it shifts like 3-4degrees it should be noticable.

This system along with the added compression is the reason why the 1.8i 20V has a better non-boosted VE than the 1.8T

What schrick kit did you go with ? Any reason why schrick ?
I'm thinking Catcams... They are steel billet, and come with adjustable camgears, both on the exhaust and inlet...

I think they were the only thing for my car at the time I had the motor built.

IIRC, Audi's VVT shifts the cam ~22 degrees.

Default 22degrees?! isn't that really much ? Are you sure? Wouldn't that give some huge overlap ?

maybe "pulsing" the solenoid like a boost controller could give something inbetween ?
no, thats prolly no good idea :-p

if its really 22degrees shift that actually should open for some really nice top-end improvement with the right camgearsettings, cams and TUNING!
when cam "shifts" this will probably let some fresh metered air out the exhaust that will make the car run abit lean... Does require some smart thinking...

Does the 1.8i actually use the VCT for performance, or is it like an emision improvement on cold engine/low revs ?
I've also heard the last. I think that is the case on some of the AWW turbo engines at least, but I dont know with the 1.8i
Have to get that extra VE from somewhere else than CR...

Default i find that hard to believe... also this I'm talking bout is not VVT... VCT/VP!

varible valve timing would be like honda vtec...

audi's system is more like...
VCT - variable cam timing
or VP - variaple phasing
