How do you know if you need to upgrade them?

if they leak or are broken replace them... otherwise no worries

How do I know if they are broken? Wont replacing both mounts help with shifting/engine stability?

Default Stiffen up engine movement.
If they are broken there is usually a purple goo coming out of them or you can see physical tears.
